As a popular newspaper reported, I was told that at a university although the history exam question was found it not difficult, the number of students with their history mark less than 5 is more than 50% of total students joined the university exam and there are very few students gain high mark (8 or 9). And I personally have learned that my knowledge about Vietnamese history is very poor. So, as for you, where is the reasons result in the situation and what necessary to do to improve the situation? And do you think It is an alarming matter? :-?

Honestly, I don't have interested in Vietnamese hystory ( (
), I think the most interesting period of hystory it's antique hystory, time of holy, and I'm really enjoy the hystory of Europe and Egypt 'cause they had developed quickly . However, at that time, we have nothing and in fact, been colonized. Beside, I detest the pre-modern time, which is full of guns and armor. :-B

You are a Vietnamese citizen, but you don't like Vietnamese history! Impossible to believe!!! You said that you were interested in European history so when you see europeans and I assume that History is the chapter that they and you are discussing. I'm sure that they will request you to talk about Vietnamese history rather than European history and I don't know How about you at that time!!! There are any ideas else?

I didn't say that I don't like Vietnamese Hystory, just don't have interest in studying that. Of course learning Vietnamese hystory would be fine to me but I said that other countries's hystory would be more interesting, don't you think

Right, i studied a lot of European history, from the time of the Pharaoh, the Assyrian Empire, the city of Troy and its heroes to the Dark Age of Europe. It's just as amazing as Chinese history.

I also did some researchs on Vietnamese history, it's not as great and heroic as people usually think. Actually many Vietnamese historians exaggerate Vietnam history A LOT. For instance, they claim the bronze drums as the unique thing of the Viet culture, in fact it's not, and it's just rediculous to do such a thing.

There are many many things that people don't tell you in Vietnamese school, like many of the rebellion against Chinese imperial gorvernment in Vietnam were in fact lead by Chinese figures. The Viets at the time of the Dong Son culture in general were not really civilized. There were central government, pretty good blacksmith skills, but it's still nothing compared to nornthern Chinese folks. The Viet to Chinese was like the Gaul to Roman or Greek.

I see a lot of Vietnamese kids who think that they know about Vietnam history. Those kids just go around and say things like "Vietnam kicks @$$es, oh yeah, we beat the American, oh yeah we beat the French, oh yeah, we beat the Chinese, the Mongol" --> Just craps.

Seriously, even when you pay attention on the history stuffs in school, you're still not gonna get anything but just a whole bunch of untrue things. Like "Commies are the world's saviors". I think that the reason why nobody is really interested in history subject in Vietnam. Because in the entire history book, Vietnam always kicks @$$es, just like in "White snow and seven dwarfs".

I don't want to criticize anything but don't think that our battle is good after all. Always cheating :(. Why can't we fight like real men, real country?

OK! so in your opinion, Vietnamese people and army's victories in the past such as Dien Bien Phu victory and our effort to liberate the south... are a cheat!!! OK, we will not refer to the matter. It's sure that we don't have the same view at the matter. But I think that you missed the point. What I want us to discuss is not to review the Vietnamese wars. I want us to discuss the Real situation of Vietnamese young people’s knowledge about history and the reasons for that.

first, the Vietnamese method of memorizing stuff is just retarded. People are not encouraged to develop their interests, their passion in the field of history, but rather to see it as an unesessary thing that they have to pass.

In Vietnam, people are not allow to choose what they want to learn in high schools. So they may also feel that they are enforced to study history and other things like literature. I think part of it is because the Vietnamese culture gives Maths and Sciences too many credits, and that influence student's attitude about other social subjects.

About the Vietnam War, it's just a stupid war. This is the way I see it: the Southern government of Vietnam is a dictatorship goverment. The Northern one is also a dictatorship government. And there's no hope for democracy in both governments.
The American involvement in Vietnam is also a stupid thing to do because it's just simply not American business. America has nothing to do with the internal affairs of a Southeast Asian nation like Vietnam.

Dien Bien Phu is not as great as you think it's, in average, every Frenchman fell that day, he took with him five Viet soldiers. After the Dien Bien Phu battle, the Viet Minh was exhausted and had to accept the treaty to split the country into two parts. Without that treaty, you can't tell what would happen because French still have a lot of garrison in the South, and there are also many non communists movements that support the Frech, or neither support French nor northern Commies.
